I plan to free the bird next week. Actually, though I received a few votes for the throw out bearing, the few mechanics I've asked ALL say it's the pilot bearing given the symptoms I described. In any case, I suppose it's time for the clutch job. Since I'm not too far away, I think I may go to Fast German Auto for the repair. I've been curious what they're up to there anyway, and maybe I can see one of their rebuilt 2.1 motors. As always, thanks to all who replied. david
