Subject: Audi Gauges & Toyota Consolettes (Limited Vanagon Content)
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Vanagoneers;

In my junkyard tour of this afternoon I happened upon an Audi 4000, '81 or '82, with the VDO gauges in the center console in front of the shifter. These I promptly removed for use in my '87 GL (there's the Vanagon content). In this particular car there were provisions for three 2" gauges in the center console but only two gauges were present - a voltmeter and temperature gauge (in deg C). This is great but what I was really hoping to find was an oil press. gauge. Did any of the Audi's come with a 2" oil press. gauge in the center console? Was this car just the exception by not having one?

Another discovery made in the junkyard - the center auxillary gauge consolette out of an early '80's Toyota pickup looks like it will fit very nicely on the front of the heater box in a Vanagon. The Toyota's had this gizmo that mounted to the heater on the top and the transmission tunnel on the bottom and held two, 2" gauges at an angle up towards the driver. It is a nicely-contoured plastic housing that will mount to a flat surface. This was an optional package and I seem to see more of them on the 4-wheel drive versions than the 2-wheel drives. Sure looks like it would work and look very good as well but, as my junkyard ramblings did not enable me to return home till after dark, I have not tried it in the Vanagon yet. Just another option to possibly consider for mounting auxilliary gauges.
