Not having seen Jim Arnott's 83.5 setup, I cannot really say, but..................

I have several editions of Bentleys to refer to. Note - the 1983 edition does not cover the Wasserboxer. These sections were not inserted until the 84 edition.

Page 19.8 (both editions) won't show the Rear Bleeder Assy because that's the wrong area to look for it.

Take a closer look on page 19.9, upper left corner (both editions). "Bleeder connection valve open when filling or bleeding cooling system see Figure 6" (They don't say what page Fig. 6 is on, but it's on page 19.12 of the 84-85 dated Bentleys or on page 19.16 of the 86-91 dated Bentleys).

Take another closer look at the 83-85 1.9 diagram on page 19.14 (84-85 edition) or 19.10 (86-91 edition) about half way down the page, where it indicates the Rear Bleeder Valve.

All Wasserboxer Vanagons had both a bleed valve in the front and in the rear. However, the pictures in the Bentley CAN be misleading.

Take a look again at page 19.9 (both editions). The picture they have there shows the VERY EARLY 1983 1.9 setup, i.e. Feed and Supply Hoses going across the front of the engine compartment with no intermediate plastic device most of us are use to seeing. This arrangement was used up through VIN 25-D-087510 (eng DH 002154) with a small bleeder valve assembly attached to the bypass hoses shown in the picture. The intermediate plastic piece (with the bleeder now moved to there as part of that assembly) was introduced on VIN 25-D-087511 (eng DH 002155) and used through the end of 1.9 production.

Why Bentley has never changed the pictures to accurately depict the more common 83.5-85 hose/bleeder system is unknown of course, which can make it difficult to perform the job right.

The 86-91 Rear Bleeder is located on top of the Thermostat Assembly, as shown on page 19.11 (86-91 edition).

Now is everyone properly confused? :-)
