John-Reed,

I did the same number on my syncro as soon as I bought it. I also replaced the distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I bought one of the "syncro" filters since Kyle Wade was selling them for $25, and someone on the list thought they were of a quality to be displayed on his "coffee table." Well, I put mine in the vehicle.

Surrounded by perforated sheet metal, the filter is an enlongated cylinder, or flat sided oval shaped cylinder. Thus, it must have more surface area than the simple cylindrical filter. I assume the standard filter is round, like the one I replaced. -- Regards, David Bogle Brooklyn '87 Syncro Westfalia
