Hey gang,
Thanks for all the help, so far.   I have been able to determine the following.

--tried the unhook the negative battery cable and wait a while fix to no avail.
--checked fuel flow at the line exiting the filter.  It is pushing fuel when starter is operated.
--checked voltage at Hall sender(I don't know why, was in the neighborhood.)
Voltage is about 12 volts with ignition switched on.
--when starter is switched on,  I can hear and feel the relays in the box above the coil go into action.
--installed a new O2 sensor.  What the heck.  It was about time.
--had significant other operate starter.   No spark observed from spark plug wire
--disconnected coil wire from distributor, operated starter.  No spark observed
arcing from coil wire to ground.

Did I do the ignition wire tests correctly?  Shouldn't I have seen a spark arc from the spark plug wire and the coil wire?
Your continued assistance is greatly needed and appreciated.
I have been off the list for a while due to travel but vanagon.com never ceases to amaze.
