Nearly always leaking from the grommets on the top of the tank that seal the side to side vent tube or the vent tube up to the filler. About $2 each from VW, you need 3. Can also by the myriad of 5mm vent lines running up to the overflow expansion tanks these can be replaced with 1/4" ameican style fuel line and spring clamps. Regular Vanagon maintainence should involve replacement of all these. It is not hard but can take a full day the first time, and there are some tricks to getting to all of these in order to get the tank down correctly. I posted a pretty definitive explanation a few months back in response to someone, you might search a few months ago under my name or for things like gas tank filler grommet etc. If you have no luck, I can detail the stuff again.
