Subject: Replacement engine space

As I have found information about a number of sources of adapters for replacement third-party Vanagon engines, I will put together a list of suppliers and their wares and contact details in a future post that can be easily found in the archives. In the meantime, does anyone have any detailed measurements of the available space in the Vanagon from a known datum i.e the top centre edge of the gearbox? From this, it should be easy to determine whether or not a specific engine will physically fit and whether it is necessary to raise the engine cover. On this subject, there are sources here in the UK who sell a raising rock'n'roll bed mechanism that allows the engine cover to be raised and still have a fully working bed. If anyone is interested, I'll post their details.

On the subject of conversions, I use a tuning shop near London to do my work (they fitted a Rover/Buick 215cu in into my UK Ford Transit Van) who have had experience of converting Vanagons in the past. They have fitted both the above V8 (which has since been removed and fitted with a 440 Chrysler (mid-mounted)) and another with the Alfa Romeo boxer flat four engine.

I notice on the KEP site that they provide numerous VW/Porsche adapter plates. Will these fit the Vanagon or is it simply the Subaru that they provide kits for?

Lastly, does the Vanagon gearbox (gas) share its engine fixings with any other models? Are there any other engines (other than the 1.9 and 2.1) that will bolt directly onto this gearbox?

Malcolm
