Paul, I have heard on the list in the past that idle stabilizers can be repaired. I currently have mine out of my '86 pending repair. I eased the plastic cover off to expose the circuit board and spied two faulty components that showed signs of severe heating. Still haven't gotten around to fixing it. "Das Boot" has too many other problems right now but I know of one list member who, in the past, repaired his stabilizer for about 5 dollars worth of resistors/etc.

Joel Walker posted some factory recalls regarding the units you mentioned for the '86 Vanagon. They are in the archives.

Does anybody know if VWofA still honors recalls on vehicles that are this old??
