Subject: fuel tank nipples
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I've got the fuel leak when full problem on my 1991 Multivan.

I just bought a new fuel tank from Ron at Bus Depot. The tank's got a 1/4" fuel-draw nipple (and a 1/4" return nipple). My old tank (which appears to be rusting at the seams) has got a 1/2" fuel draw nipple (and also a 1/4" return nipple).

The fill pipe seems to be correct.

I am worried that reducing the 1/2" draw (which is what the fuel pump takes) to a 1/4" hose will starve the fuel pump.

I certainly believe Ron when he says this is the right tank, but has anyone else with a 1991 model had this problem?

Is it possible that VW changed the fuel pump (to one that draws 1/2" rather than 1/4")?

Is it possible that this year ONLY has a different tank?

Ron thought that my tank, with it's 1/2" nipple, might have been made to be interchangeable between fuel injected and carburated models.

Ron's suggestion is to put a Bosch fuel filter (which has a 1/4" inlet and 1/2" outlet) between the tank and the fuel pump. He says some models come with this adaption already installed. Surely, unless I hear otherwise from a listmember with the same problem, this is what I'll do.

Any suggestions???

Thanks! And, thanks also to Ron who's been very helpful throughout this transaction!
