Tim is, unfortunately, misinformed.  The filters he buys are not genuine VW
filters, and in fact are not even Bosch filters!  This fact has been noted
on the list several times and is in the Archives.  Bosch is not the O.E. oil
filter supplier to Volkswagen.  They do not even make this particular oil
filter.  If you read the box you will see that it is marked "made in USA,"
not Germany or Austria like the Mahle and Mann.  Bosch is simply repackaging
an off-the-shelf US aftermarket filter -Fram, I believe, which could
probably be had cheaper still under the Fram name.

My post directly responded to a question about whether there was a
cheaper-than-dealer source for genuine oil filters.  It was accurate,
informative, appropriate, and brief.  None of these could be said about
Tim's response.
