A number of years ago I had a '79 Scirocco with a five speed. In order to break the 100mph barrier, I had to down shift to 4th gear. Don't remember the engine speed but I used to think it strange that it would go faster in 4th than 5th. Now with some experience I understand. You need torque and speed to make POWER. Engine speed with tall gears will reduce available power. The Waterboxer being a short stroke engine will make things worse as it can not develop much torque to begin with. That is why it is geared as it is.
