When my 85 Westy was having charging problems the shop ran two 10 gauge wires from each of the battery terminals directly to the alternator, attaching one to the charging terminal and the other grounded to the alternator. Fixed the problem. He said this bypassed starter route to help keep battery charged. -Steve Frisbee
