Last week I posted to the Vanagon list, looking for info about installing a new ignition switch because I was having starting problems with my '82 Westfalia 2.0 aircooled. I replaced the switch and guess what..... no change - still no start.

I did the diagnostics in the Bentley manual which pointed to a bad solenoid. Jim Thompson's Oldvolkshome website suggested disassembling the solenoid to check for lack of lubrication, resulting in sticking.

Today I removed the starter and sure enough, the solenoid piston was dry and crusty. I cleaned it and the bore in the solenoid, put some high temp grease on it, and reassembled. It works great. The cost, just some time instead of $100-200 for a rebuilt starter.
