Subject: For Sale: 1980 Westfalia

I'm not really sure if I want to sell this or not, but I figure if I
start fielding offers I'll find out.
I've got a 1980 Westfalia Basic Camper that I might like to sell. By
basic camper I mean that it lacks the stove and propane system and it
merely has an icebox instead of the 3-way fridge of the DeLuxe campers.
It is in nearly excellent condition. I've only owned it for a few
months and the PO was one of the most meticulous people I've ever met.
He did a lot of work to this thing and it shows.
It's Assuan Brown--new paint and no rust anywere on the body or
underside (except the muffler). The pop top is in good
conditions--the canvas has some scuffed parts but no holes. All the
seals seem to be new as well.
The interior has been re-done--new curtains and upholstery and the
original carpet is in great condition. The 2.0 liter air-cooled
engine and automatic tranny were both rebuilt fairly recently (before
I owned it) and the whole bus has 106k miles on it. I put on new
tires about 300 miles ago. Its got an AM FM cassette stereo with four
speakers, an Aux Gas heater (which I've never really used) and a VDO
oil temp gauge (a nice extra).
It leaks some oil through the oil cooler and the suspension creaks a
little over bumps, other than that it's in great mechanical shape. It
could stand to have new side mirrors put on. The fuel pump is noisy,
but works well. (oh, and the fuel lines are only about a year old--for
those of you who have been following the list for a while.) Also, if
you slam the passenger side door while the window is down if sometimes
gets knocked loose from the "lifter" (it's not too hard to put back
on, though.)
If it's so great why am I selling? (I know you're going to ask--I
always do when I'm looking at a used vehicle) Well, bascially two
reasons. This is the second vanagon I've owned. The first caught
fire while my wife and I were in it (ancient fuel lines--and I didn't
know any better yet) and I can't get that experience out of my head.
So I basically can't relax enough while I'm driving to really
appreciate this vehicle--I figure it ought to go to someone who can.
And finally--my wife wants something with enough oomph to pull a horse
trailer--and a Vanagon, while a great vehicle in many respects, ain't
really about oomph.
so there it is. I'd like to try to get $4500 out of it. I know it
sounds high for an '80 but this thing is in great shape. I've not
seen any others that compare.
I'm located in Berea, KY which is in the middle of the state right off
of I-75.
If you think you'd like to see this Vanagon please e-mail or call
(606) 986-9341 ext. 7235.
thanks,
mac
