Michael and Vanagon List, I have done simular swaps with a couple of Vanagons now. I don't have experience with the Diesel transmission, but from what everyone tells me it makes to high RPM cruzing. But this also gives you more low end power AKA get up and go! If you do any off roading this is a real benafit. You can also install taller tires to offset the high highway RPMs.

From personal experience, I would not consider any displacement under 1.8L - a good simple swap is a 1.8L JH engine from Rabbit GTI / 84-89 Cabriolet or Scirocco. These are CIS which is simple and bullet proof and they are 8.5:1 compression ratio and it does not require a knock sensor. The ultimate engine is a 2.0L from a 93-98 Golf / Jetta or 88-90 Audi 80. This is what I have in my Double Cab and I am tickeled pink with it!
