A few months back I posted several times regarding an annoying steering crunch/clunk in my '85 GL. After replacing just about everything (steering gear, flexible couplings) between the steering wheel and the steering rack I finally fixed it for good. Turns out the u-joint just before the steering rack was worn. Got a new one from the dealer for $118 (far less than any aftermarket unit I was able to find). Anyway, it's a relief to have finally got that cleared up. Steering feels tighter on center and a weird, very slight rhythmic vibration is gone too! If anyone is having clunking/crunching in the steering when cranking the wheel through sharp, slow speed turns give that u-joint a check. Mark |
