Subject: AFM induced Sputtering fixed...

original post subject: Hilfe! Sputtering on Hwy 80 going (trying to) west.

First, thanks to everyone who helped out. We just got back from the trip, which we ended up taking in the Subaru.

Lacking all soldering skills and capacitor know-how, I opted to purchase the VW fix for the problem. To my shock, the otherwise useless local VW dealership had 2 in stock. When I saw the "fix" (a pig-tail of a part) I felt like it was a 150 dollar gamble, but I took the Syncro Westy out this morning in similar weather conditions (27 deg F) and it perform flawlessly in an hour of highway driving at 65 mph. (it's pretty easy to cruise at speed for a long time here in the Nebraska/Iowa--no hills and no traffic).

At the end of my hour, I cruised up into to some rolling hills in Iowa and found some pretty cool dirt roads and old snow to cruise around in. What a blast. Got to use the diff lock on some iced over descents and granny-low for some really bad trails.

Thanks again for all of the advice and offers.
