Intellectual property (what you write, draw, photograph, etc.), under USA law, is copyrighted automatically when it is created. The creator need do nothing special. If the creator of the work so chooses, the copyright can be registered. If this is done, it gives additional legal rights in the case of infringement, primarily the right to recover attorney's fees in addition to damages. So, keep in mind that the copyright is automatic. Also keep in mind that, while I am a writer who has to deal with copyrights on an ongoing basis, I am not a lawyer. If copyright law is of concern to you, you should certainly meet with your lawyer to determine how it affects you.
