The $90 or so extractor exhaust I bought from a vendor who advertises on this list fit quite well. While it was definitely louder than a stock exhaust, I would not say it was even close to obnoxious. I didn't notice any mileage difference with it, but I did detect more power, maybe like 17 gerbils in the wheel instead of 16.

I wound up taking it off a year and a half later though, because the muffler, which had a little angle bracket welded on it that wasn't used on my 82 Vanagon, got a hole in it where a harmonic vibration had shaken that little bracket until it ripped itself off, leaving a 2" hole. Then it WAS loud.

The pipes were still in very good shape, and in retrospect I suppose a patch of metal could have been welded over the hole, because the muffler, while rusty, had not rusted through. I took it off because I discovered replacement mufflers were not available and my FLmuffler shop wanted nearly as much as a new system to graft a suitable muffle to it. While I was relating the tale to the vendor and inquiring about replacement muffler for that system, unprompted, they offered me better than normal price on a Dansk big-can-that-bolts-to-both-heat-exchangers type. I went for that.

It's WAY quiet. So quiet I wind up stalling more often pulling away from stops because I can't hear what the motors doing unless I'm holding my breath. I like it. Time to get cooking on that tach install project.
