Jonathan, in my experience when I changed over to Mobil 1 synthetic for our '86 Vanagon
over two years ago, we had NO problems. I don't know what the DPO used or often he used
it, but the engine kept on running better and better as we went through oil & filter
changes @6000 km. I think it took about four or five changes before the van settled in
to it even purr.
