Subject: Retrofitting Cruise Control to a Vanagon
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Vanagoneers,

I know that in the past several months there was a thread going about using Audi cruise control parts on Vanagons. Helmut and Ken were two of the contributors to this thread. The use of Audi 5000 components was discussed as being the same as what was originally used on Vanagons. My question is this: How do Audi 4000/VW Quantum cruise control systems compare to the Vanagon's? Do either of these use the 90 deg pick-up on the speedo or are they the same 45 deg as the 5000's use as mentioned by Helmut? Do either of these cars use the electric vacuum pump as the Vanagon does? How about the servo - is it the same as what was used on the Vanagon? Reason I'm asking is that I have found 2 Audi 4000's and 1 VW Quantum in one of my local junkyards and they all have factory cruise control. The Quantum is an '87 (I think) so I'm hoping that VW standardized on cruise control pieces throughout their range by this year model. My goal is to retrofit my '87 GL with the factory cruise control as cheaply as possible. All comments and/or suggestions are welcome. I am planning another junkyard safari for this Friday and it would be good to know which vehicle to concentrate on as far as scavanging parts goes.
