I've read some negative comments about GEX. You might check these URL's for a rebuilt engine or parts:

I've seen both vendors mentioned in the list -- don't recall anything negative. A year and half ago I ordered a rebuilt 1.9L from a VW dealer for $2200. It was supposed to be delivered in 10 days. After four weeks of waiting I canceled the order and bought a newer van, but that's another option -- your experience might be different.
