I bought mine from the VW dealer and it's a Bosch. I like to think it makes a difference. The price of a good one is not too big a deal.

The second is the thickness at high temperatures. I switched to the same brand at 0w-30 for January & February. I was expecting a cold winter but mostly it's been warm here (Wisconsin) -- I also don't do any highway driving for those two months. 0w-30 may be too thin though -- next year I'll use 10w-30, but it sure was easy to start on those few days of -20 F.

The owner's manual has a chart but the temperature ranges are so small that it looks like you'd need to change oil every two months.
