Most of the Vanagons experience a problem in the oil flow and with the switches, synthetic oil cures that - or part of the problem. VW recommends an oil / oilfilter change every 15000 KM or about 9000 miles. synthetic cost 4/5 quarts some $12 and $8 for the filter and gasket so by skipping your fathers advice changing the oil every 3000 k you would probably save money and do something good to your engine
