Was it wet when you were driving? If not, ignore the rest of this.

I went on a trip when my 86 syncro started to do the same. It was awful weather. I made it to a parts store and bought some "ignition dry-and-go". I had to spray my O2 sensor wires with it. (It took me a good while to figure out that it was the O2 sensor, I just sprayed everything that might be affected by the water.) It still acts up once in a while in the rain or slush, quick spray, good for day. (I am replacing it, just haven't had a chance yet)

It seems that when I was driving slower, it wouldn't get wet enough to act up, but at highway speeds, the heat from the exhaust wasn't enough to keep it dry.

Hope it helped.
