Gary, I did replace the joint last summer and I tried to get a cheaper alternative - there is none. Once you look at your old joint you will see why and also why it is necessary to replace it - no fun when inoperable.. The operation on a powersteering set-up is abit trciky you may have to loosen the rack first to get the clearance. Moneywise, the joint is $190, that is your cost at VW or $177 wholesale, you want your mechanic to put it in and warranty the work and with about $250/270 your probably right on the money, don't forget to tip your mechanic after you bit in the sour apple of paying, thats just the way it works...

BTW check also alignment, upper control arms etc. as this is probably the real culprit that made your U-joint wear out,
