Subject: chopping '78 roof

I recently saved a van ('78, this will also be going on the T2 list) from the boneyard. The rear half of the roof had been used as a dance floor and has a huge dent. Since another project is the last thing I need, and the first thing I'll jump at, I was wondering if anyone had cut the top off a van or vanagon to make a pickup type vehicle. I'm thinking about chopping the roof a foot or two behind the front seats and closing it in with the rear or a suitable substitute. Any thoughts? Thanks, Patrick
