After many miles (or perhaps not so many) the little green gear which drives the odo gradually works its way off the shaft until it no longer makes contact with its drive gear.

Mine worked its way off after only 65,000 miles, and was replaced under warrantee. The second one went about the same distance (no longer under warrantee). I used a socket and tapped the little gear back to where it belonged, but it only lasted about 15,000 miles more. I now have a speedo which came from a wrecking yard. It shows 326,000 (accurately).

The thought crossed my mind that one could drive the little gear back to where it belongs, and then with a pair of side cutters, put a slight crimp in the gear shaft just outside of the little gear. It wouldn't take much to keep the gear from walking its way off the shaft, and I think the slight crimp would work fine.

Thoughts?
