Sounds like your alternator belt slipping. When the belt is relatively cold - not warmed from the friction of movement - it shrinks a bit and will not seat snuggly in the pulleys. The load on the alternator due to a partially drained battery is probably sufficient enough to cause the cool - relatively - belt to slip, thus causing the screech you hear.
