Russ: My 91 2.1 litre watercooled syncro/westy uses a carb (as I have said many times) The PO put on a Weber 2 barrel downdraft progressive carb, he used the intake manifold from a beetle (I think). The carb + K&N filter sat too high (for the lid), so he had to cut down the vertical intake pipe from the carb to the horizontal pipes. A distributor is of course needed (I don't know what kind I have). I have taken some good, long trips with my van (1 year old to me) and the carbs have worked fine with about the same mpg as other sycnro westies.

Many people will talk about carbs being MORE problem, but I have not experienced that yet. I do delete about 50 posts a day regarding AFMs, ECUs, O2, injectors, etc.

You should worry about any emissions tests that you have to pass, This summer when I am in the US, I plan to have my car tested to get some readings that I can post to the list. The carbs certainly change the way the van drives, you have to DRIVE a van with carbs as they can be temperamental, also Carb icing is a problem when the temps get cold. A low pressure fuel pump will do, that's what I have.

Russ: If I can be of any other help, please let me know. Malcolm S
