What is with these power steering racks? Mine just did the same thing! Empties the reservior in about 5 miles of driving. And not a drop to be found, but I know it is all pooling in the rack boots just waiting for me to open them and dump into my face. That makes three bad racks in today's list mail. Is there some astrological occurrance happening right now?

A bit frustrated with this, as I just finished the install of my 2.1 liter waterboxer in my 1984 Westfalia. Thought I had it made, but I guess it is a Vanagon, and I shouldn't expect such good luck.

By the way, upgrading to the 2.1 engine makes all the difference in the world. Plenty of power, and I can merge onto a busy freeway without any problems. Can't wait to see how it does in the mountains, where the 1.9 really had trouble.

It looks like the steering rack on my son's Syncro has taken a bullet to the head. I haven't seen it yet, but he says the boots are shredded, fluid is leaking and it makes a screeching noise when you turn the steering wheel. So, looking in the Bentley I see a diagram of the system but not a step by step removal and replacement. Anybody have some info you could e-mail me, what to look out for, what all needs to be replaced that is not included in the replacement rack, how long should this take, any special tools needed.

Sure appreciate any and all the help you can offer.
