Dave,

I have driven a little Suzuki Samurai down to Mexico City for the Christmas holidays. Drove down with my wife and kid. I didn't have a spare tire and I had a blowout which ruined my tire. I managed to get to one of the many tire repair guys, left my car with him, jumped on a bus to the nearest town, found a Goodyear tire dealer, bought the tire, got on another bus with some difficulty, due to many folks traveling over the holidays, got the new tire back to the tire man well after dark. He changed the new tire for me without much trouble and for not much money. Then we were off to Mexico City. Drove around Mexico City and found a hotel with no big trouble. Made our way back without any hassles, except that some sort of sporting event was letting out just as we were looking for a hotel in one city whose name escapes me and we were caught in a traffic jam for a while.

I drove a Chevy Mini van done to Monterey on another trip. The toll road from Laredo to Monterrey is super nice. You can go 90 100 mph with no problem. Traffic in all the cities is pretty bad and you don't know where in the hell you are going, but if you keep trying you can wind up where you want to go. If I go again, I might buy a cheap compass so I can keep track of which direction I am going after I have to make a whole series of turns that I hadn't planned on making.

Border crossing is a bit of a pain, lot of waiting in line and getting things stamped and paying a little money here and there, but not too bad.
