Ok everyone, just my $.02. when I rebuilt my engine, I bought my autobahn coolant for about $7.00 gal from fast german auto. Don't know if they still sell it for that price, but I thought it was a great deal.

Alan,

I purchased phosphate free anti freeze from my local independent auto parts store. They claimed it was mandated by GM for newer cars and had never heard of the necessity for VW. It was clearly marked phospate free. It is "TEXACO Havoiline DEXCOOL" and is marked as being approved for GM.

I paid $10.50 per gallon, so I don't think that $14.00 is too bad from a dealer.
