Joe,

When the CV's started to go on my '84 GL, I swapped them and they were fine for another three years till I felt like justifying the bucks for new. They probably could have gone longer, but I was swapping the tranny and took care of the joints at the same time. For my money the swap can buy time to budget for replacement with little downside.
