Go for the Syncro if possible! If for some reason you can't get one there are ways to improve the transaxle performance, such as the addition of a limited slip type differential, that will improve the 2WD to 'close-but not quite' status of the Syncro. Another point to consider is that if a Syncro only part needs to be replaced then expect a much higher cost for repair than with the comparable item on a regular Vanagon. For example, the 2WD gearbox is $1000 less to rebuild than a Syncro and takes half as long to R&R into the vehicle. However, my personal choice would still be the Syncro if I could!
