From the above description I'd say the pin for the relay lever for 1st and 2nd gear has sheared. You could just open the case and replace the lever but since this is a used transaxle with over 100K on it I'd say its rebuild time. With this many years and miles there *will* be worn parts that should be replaced.

I have a scan that shows this lever that I'll be happy to send to anyone who asks.
