Why? Well, you said it: The 'rubber bits' or rubber hose connections have to potential to fail. Even a new hose can fail if it is not crimped properly. And the insidious thing about a fire in the vanagon is that you have to be watching your mirrors to notice it quickly. Of course prevention is the first priority. That is in the vast majority of cases sufficient. In my particular case (I started the current version of this thread), I have my van apart and I am running extra wires while I have things opened up. I figure for a few dollars (say $5 for wire, $15 for a sensor, and $5 for a buzzer) I can install an alarm system to give me an early warning. Not something that is necessary, but why not since I have the time and it is not so hard to do.
