Jerry--
Welcome to the list and to VW ownership.
Your best bet for your Westfalia Vanagon's owners manual would be a "Bug &
Bus" type show, or a junkyard, or perhaps a listee (of this list). In my
(non-altruistic) opinion, copying or scanning is out of the question. The
manuals for our 1982 Westfalia total about1.5-2.0 cm in paper, more than I
care to hand place on a scanner. "Buggout" in Manassas, VA comes up in
April, (I think) You can prolly get a manual there.
I use a Haynes, and find it sufficient. A Bentley is far better.
The key I am not so sure about. There is a chap that comes to Buggout that
has (or can make) keys for almost ALL VW stuff. If you bring the code for
your doors or glove box, he cuts them by the numbers (instead of the little
K-mart grinding thing most store use). You may want to check that type of
entrepreneur for assistance, or run a search of this list's archives for
words like "water tank key".
If you MUST fill the water tank ASAP, there is an access panel in the
bottom of the rear horizontal bin next to the rear bench seat (if you were
sitting on the rear bench seat, the bin next to your left elbow). Remove
those two little screws, and the lid to the water tank is just below.
If I were you, I would give the tank a good scrubbing with a few gallons of
clean water, and a cup of chlorine bleach. Turn the sink faucet on to draw
some up in the tube, and let it run for a minute or two. Then RINSE
EVERYTHING THOROUGHLY with clean water. Our owners manual (and many listees
including me agree) suggests leaving the tank dry until you get near where
you are going to camp. This keeps micro-jeebers from growing in the water,
prevents freezing of water in the tank, and keeps that 0-60 mph
acceleration at around 5.5 seconds.

Subject: Key and Owners Manual
Does anyone know how to get a key for the water inlet port on my '83
Vanagon/Westfalia. Someone told me they may be the same for all...
Also, can anyone xerox or get me an original owners manual. The VW
dealer said that they stopped printing after '86. I want an owners
manual. I just got the '83 and I am not so sure I am aware of all of
the bells and whistles. I am wondering what others use for a repair
manual. Haynes or Bentley or..... suggestions please....
I guess one more thing. I now own a Vanagon. It's a camper fully
outfitted. Is it a Westfalia as well. thank you thank you.
This list is absolutely incredible
