Never had this happen on a VW, but went through it with a '79 GMC pickup. Lost the left rear wheel. Everything happened exactly as you described it. The noise, the inability to find a problem, then being passed by my own wheel. In my case I replaced the wheel and the lugs. The hub was fine.
