Cliff,

My recommendation would be to get the proper sealant from the VW dealer. I've always done it that way because it is such a critical seal on these motors. I want the extra comfort of knowing I'm using the factory stuff, not some generic compound. A tube costs about $12.00 and will do about six heads. Be sure they give you a fresh tube, I've seen some dried up ones sitting on the dealer's shelf. There should be a date stamped on the tube, and to be safe, open it at the dealer to be sure it is gooey and not dried up.

I'm (finally!) in the process of re-assembling my 1.9L engine; I'm about to re-attach the heads. I started looking at the sealant that came with the engine gasket kit I bought from Bus Depot - it's green and labeled Universal Sealing Compound 100PU. Anyone out there know if this is the correct type for the head gaskets? I was under the impression that the head gasket sealant was a black compound, and thicker than this green stuff.

Thanks in advance...
