Another alternative to the crappy low-beam light problem that works well and
is much cheaper than the $300 E-code lights that I have been reading about
lately is the Hella XL auxillary low-beam light.  I put a pair on my 89
Westy and I am pleased with the results.  This link

picture that compares typical low-beam patterns to the pattern of this
light.  It matches the improvement that I saw after I installed my lights.
These lights seem to go anywhere from $120 to $220 on the web.  The place I
ordered from had the lowest cost that I found and did not charge extra for
the molly-mount kit.  I got mine for $120 from
http://www.savannajones.com/hella1.htm .  This site shows a picture of the
complete kit.  It took less than a week to receive it.  I also used a VW
factory fog light switch instead of the provided switch for a cleaner look
($15).  These switches are no longer made and are hard to track down though.
I didn't get mine from them, but I think that Fast German Auto may still
have some available.  An advantage to the factory switch is that it is a
three way switch and you can wire up a rear red fog light in the open slot
that is available in the driver's side brake/turn signal/backup light
assembly.  I haven't done this yet but I plan on doing it once it warms up
some.
