Subject:      Transmission cooler for 86 automatic?

I would like to know if there is a possibility of adding a transmission cooler for an 86 Vanagon.  My friend pulls a light trailer with it and is afraid to burn up the trans.  He pulls a light trailer with 2 jet skies.  I wouldn't this that this would be to heavy.  His 84 auto self destructed.  He was told by his mechanic the you shouldn't pull any trailers with automatic trailers....is this true???  I would like to know what to tell him.  I looked in the Bentley manual and I can see a pressure port (used for diagnosis) but where can we put a return?
