Hey Karl,

The 86 Vanagon ( and I think all the wbx automatics) have a tranny fluid to engine coolant intercooler already installed at the front of the tranny behind the forward tranny mount. Having towed a 4x8 trailer w/800 pounds of cargo 6000 miles last summer to Alaska, I think that intercooler does the job nicely. The biggest thing to remember is to keep that coolant system in tip top shape...that's the real key to towing success with the automatic.
