Matthew -
This is Idaho, I don' think anybody in the state knows what a smog test
it. If you saw some of the POS rigs on the highway you would know they
couldn't pass any sort of test!
I run all seasons on the front and snows on the rear, with separate rims
for the snows. Depends on what you want to do long term. Snows all
around would be better. It's cheaper to be able to put them on
yourself. Generally I put the snows on mid October and take them off
when the mud season is ending, April or May. A set of tire chains under
the back seat is a VERY GOOD IDEA. Practice putting them on in your
driveway before you have to use them some dark night. There have been
times when I have chained up to drive up muddy hills in the summer, so I
carry them all year round.
Have your battery checked. Cold weather makes it harder to turn over
the engine, but my 83 has only had a problem once.
There is some salt on the roads, but not a lot. Best bet is to wash off
the underside of your rig from time-to-time.
Let me know if there's anything else you need to know about the area.

Subject: new rims for snow tires?
It is official, I will be starting a Ph.D. program at the University of
Idaho in the fall. Moscow is a cold place I am told, having never lived
north of San Francisco or more than 20 miles from the great blue Pacific
I have some relocation questions:
1) what type of tires do I need for my rig? Do you get another set of
rims for your winter tires?
2) are there any precautions or preventative maintenance I can do now so
my bus will survive in the cold?
3) do they salt the roads up there? and if so, how do I prevent the
inevitable rust?
4) smog laws? I will need a new cat to pass smog tests in CA, but can I
get away with it in ID w/o a cat?
