I do not pretend to be an oil filter engineer so I can't answer why Fram
works for you.  But I got the solution to my problem, off this list, from
other Vanagon, Waterboxer owners who had problems with Fram oil filters.

Imho, the factory filter provides better oil flow when the engine is
running and has a feature that provides a back flow check when the engine
is stopped. I now can leave the van parked for weeks and, on start up, have
no valve lifter noise.

Perhaps your engine is a little less tired than mine, and can get by with a
less efficient oil lube system.  But based on my experience, and that of
others on this list  (read the back posts)  Fram is not the way to go.   Is
it worth $3 or $4 bucks an oil change to risk less than optimum engine
lube.   For me the answer is no.
