I've had noisy compressors, which usually sound kinda like they're rock crushers or such. Matter of fact, the wife's '84 can be heard easily over the engine, but it keeps on going. I've never heard a whine, except when using cheap belts, which can set up a hormonic of some sort. My advice would be to try a Gates belt and see if the noise goes away.
