Subject: key codes not required to make replacements
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

This November, I had lost the keys to my gas cap. I took my car to a locksmith. What followed completely amazed me.

He selected the correct blank from his display, then inserted it in the lock. He then tried to turn the key several times, then removed it.

He examined the key, took out a file from his pocket, and proceeded to a file a perfect working key from the blank.

Apparently, blank keys are coated with a lacquer or wax, that when placed in a lock becomes marked from the pins. This becomes a guide for the trained eye.

Needless to say, I was impressed with his skill. A few thoughts, unfamiliar to me, also crossed my mind.
