Chris, you may be confident that a used Audi engine will last forever. I, however, am not. Previous owners are evil, and parts wear out prematurely, regardless of the quality of the design. I do agree that a used Audi engine will likely be in good shape, especially compared to other makes. However, there is no gaurantee that such is the case. I prefer to be certain, plus I enjoy rebuilding engines.

As for the $500 price for a used engine with all the trimmings, you might be able to get such a deal at a self service parts lot, or if you bought a used vehicle, however, there is a substantial "pain in the ass factor" involved in going this route. Disposal of the carcass can be a problem, and finding time to go to the junk yard can also be a problem. A full service salvage yard would probably charge a bit more than $500 for a complete engine, wiring harness, etc...

BTW, don't you think that your tone is a bit strident? It is your opinion that it is not a good idea to spring for a rebuilt audi engine, however, it is not undisputed proven fact that this is so. Calm down a bit, you've stated your opinion on several ocasions, and everybody who cares probably knows it by now.
