Howdy -- I had those boots ripped up on my '81 for something like
8 years.  There is a joint in there that gets kind of hacked up,
but I didn't have to replace the rack... although maybe I should
anyway, it's a bit, uh, wiggly.  If you've got power steering I'd
consider being a bit more careful, as the rack is more complicated
and more expensive to replace.

I wouldn't think 200 miles should cause a problem.  Hell, wrap it
up in strong plastic if you're really worried ;)
