Don't do that to a working cat! As an expedient measure to get the car running, ok, but not to a working cat. You won't really see much improvement in power, and you'll be producing more pollution. How is this good? Even if pollution weren't an issue, I feel a little safer knowing that should my rear hatch seal leak a bit I probably won't poison myself.

However, it is still illegal, although you're unlikely to be caught.

Just so everyone knows, here's the deal: $2500 fine for the shop that performs the work, and a $2500 fine for the owner (provided they were culpable). I.e. if the shop gutted the cat without your knowlege, you wouldn't be liable. Granted, you're unlikely to be caught, and even if caught, you're unlikely to be prosecuted. Still....
